There is no proper database of rural level environmental parameter. So felt was needed to prepare rural level environmental data base. With this objective rural environmental database preparation was started in Year 2002. Rajula taluka of Amreli district and Zagadiya taluka of Bharuch districts were selected due to its geographical locations and pollution problems. At both places permanent offices were started.
Rajula is a costal belt and because of Pipavav Port and the industrial policy of Gujarat number of industries are coming up that's why Paryavaran Mitra had started their field units. In Rajula there are 72 villages in which five year environmental database were collected, compiled and updated. Many problems came out during database collection. Mainly of them are water scarcity, salinity ingress, industrial pollution from large industrial units like Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd., Gujarat Heavy Chemicals Ltd., Ultratech Cement Ltd. (Formally L & T Ltd.) etc. Among all villages 16 coastal villages are identified which affected badly due to salinity ingress and industrial pollution. In the same region we had prepared 15 Enviro paralegals.
Zagadiya is a tribal belt and very nearer to big industrial estates. And now the numbers of industries are coming up in this area so it is urgent need to create a awareness and implementation of Bhuria samiti's recommendation for tribal people is necessary. In Zagadiya, there are 165 villages in which five year environmental database were collected, compiled and updated. Major problems in Zagadiya are pollution problems arise from GIDC of Zagadiya, Ankleshwar and Panoli. Also problems due to lignite mining came into light. In both taluka potential leaders were identified and group was created. Regular meetings were arranged with that group and guided them for problem solutions. Total 30 Enviro Paralegal were given training in both talukas We also prepared 15 Enviro paralegals in this region.
