Date – 31 March 2021, 4 pm to 5-30 pm
On 31st March 2021 a webinar was organized by Paryavaran Mitra on ‘Way to zero waste: Challenges and Inclusive solutions. Shri Shibu (GAIA,India), Shri Harshadray Solanki (Director, solid waste management, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation) and Shri Pankaj Sharma & Shri Devang Parmar (Raah Foundation) shared their views about the situation.
In this webinar, participants discussed how ZERO WASTE is not just an environmental issue but a complete socio-economic phenomenon. From Shri Shibu we learnt that including the informal waste pickers in the system can greatly improve the efficiency of municipal corporations. He also explained how waste picking is seen as something that is not respectable and to achieve a zero waste we need to change our perspective about the waste pickers.
Mr harshadrai Solanki shared with us the AMC’s strategy to go ahead for ZERO WASTE AHMEDABAD goal, municipal corporation is working hard but there are more challenges like quantity of waste, segregation of waste, citizen’s awareness etc.
In this webinar, an intern of ParyavaranMitra, Arnushi Sachan presented the main features from the document prepared by AMC titled “Roadmap to zero waste Ahmedabad by 2031”. The volunteers from Raah foundation, Mr.Pankaj Sharma and Mr Devang Parmar showed us the socio-economic situation of waste pickers with ground data. They discussed the vulnerability of waste pickers’ life by showing their living conditions and demanded to include them in the formal waste management system. The inclusion of informal waste workers will be beneficial for all – it will help in solving waste management both operation and improving the life standards of the waste pickers. The webinar was really insightful and concluded with an aim to work more about increasing stakeholder participation in ZERO WASTE AHMEDABAD.
